Like Physical Exercise, Mental Exercise comes in all different forms. Explore your consciousness and find your fit!
Mindfulness is the practice of purposely bringing one's attention to being here now in the present-moment experience without evaluation or judgement, usually through focusing on the breath and other senses. It involves active awareness of the mind as it wanders and repeatedly refocusing the awareness on the present moment. Similarly in vipassana, we become aware of our ever-changing experiences, without adding to what is going on through our reactions and projections. These are insight practices and there is no such thing as a distraction. You pay attention to whatever arises in your awareness and make that an object of meditation.
Mantra meditation is a technique that involves using mantras to relax the mind and help it focus while producing a relaxation response. It is a passive concentration process. While practicing, one uses a mantra (a word, phrase or a monosyllabic sound) to help the mind transcend the process of thought. Mantra is a Sanskrit term, with “man” meaning “mind” and “tra” meaning “release.” Think of a mantra as a tool to help release your mind.
Moving meditation is a meditative state – a shift of consciousness – while doing simple movements. It is a way of calming the mind and creating awareness. These can be both mindfully done so it's an insight practice or be done with the movement as the central focus, making it a concentration practice.
These include practices such as Yoga, Qi Gong and Tai Chi, as well as simply walking with conscious presence. They aim to control and still the mind, recognizing a detached witness-consciousness untouched by the thoughts and mundane suffering.
Metta is an active form of meditation where instead of focusing on the breath, we focus on sending benevolent thoughts and wishes into the world. We imagine that the people in our minds are touched by our good will. In metta, we direct loving-kindness toward ourselves and then, in a sequence of expansion, towards somebody we love already, somebody we are neutral towards, somebody we have difficulty with, and then toward all beings everywhere without distinction.
Metta is a concentration practice.
